After 69 job applications and several interviews, I was offered a six month position at the school I am at now.
I have worked in the construction industry for over 33 years now and have seen how the industry has gone from secure work to insecure work.
I am employed as a chicken boner which means I spend my nights carving cuts of chicken for South Australia’s dinner plates.
For 11 years I always worked for the same boss. I had no holiday pay, no sick pay, no super. He told me I had to get an ABN and that’s how he’d pay me. I did as I was told. I didn’t think I had any choice.
I started my job eight years ago and despite asking to be made permanent many times over the years, I’m still a casual.
I’ve been a TAFE teacher for nine years. At the beginning of each semester I get a timetable that gives me the hours I’m working and I get paid for that. I don’t get paid for holidays or semester breaks.
I look at people who work a forty hour week and survive on that and wonder why I work 70 hours a week and find it hard to make ends meet.
